Bored with his life in the Shinigami realm, Ryuk dropped a 'death note' (a notebook capable of killing anyone whose name is written on its pages), where it was found by Light Yagami, a bright young man who decides to use the Death Note for good, using its powers to cleanse the world of criminality.
